Week 10: 3/10-3/13
Monday - No school -- Teacher Work Day.
Tuesday - Today we completed Lesson 9 (Mod 3, Unit 1). Students reflected on the plot elements of Frederick Douglass' story so far (setting, major events, problems/issues faced). They then had the opportunity to debrief and discuss Excerpt 1, which they read last week. **Teacher side note: I was SO proud and SO impressed with the discussions happening in our classroom today! The Hippogriff kids continue to amaze and inspire me. Awesome job!!
Wednesday - Today we worked on a Menu Choice Activity with Excerpt 2 of Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. Students chose an "Appetizer" activity, a "Main Course" activity, two "Side Dish" activities, and a "Dessert" activity. Each activity had students practicing different ELA skills with Excerpt 2.
Thursday - Today students finished their Menu Choice Activities in class.
Friday - Today students engaged in their second "EOG Friday" !! Each Friday, students will be given a mini reading passage and questions to practice for their upcoming EOGs.
Week 9: 3/2-3/6
Monday - Today we completed Lesson 1 (Mod 3, Unit 1). We read Frederick Douglass' "What to the slave is the Fourth of July?" speech as a whole class, and we took time to pause and discuss various literary elements such as word choice and tone.
Tuesday - Today students engaged in a mini Socratic Seminar to unpack Frederick Douglass' "What to the slave is the Fourth of July?" speech. Students were then given their Module 3 workbooks.
Wednesday - Today students completed a Mid-Unit "check in" to demonstrate some of the skills we have been practicing this school year (citing text evidence, using context clues, etc). When students finished, they used the remainder of the class period to work on their Q3 Book Projects. The book projects are due on March 24th -- which is 20 days away!
Thursday - Today student completed Lessons 7 and 8 (Mod 3, Unit 1). Students read an excerpt from Chapter 1 of Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. As a class, we practiced making purposeful annotations to better understand a complex text. Students then practiced answering text-dependent questions.
Friday - Today students engaged in their first "EOG Friday" !! Each Friday, students will be given a mini reading passage and questions to practice for their upcoming EOGs.
Week 8: 2/14-2/28
Monday - Today students continued to talk about having conversations that may be difficult in class (we call these Courageous Conversations). We introduced the 4 Agreements of Courageous Conversations -- Stay Engaged, Speak Your Truth, Experience Discomfort, and Expect & Accept Non-Closure. Students worked in partners to select one of the agreements and create a poster to represent what that looks like in the classroom.
Tuesday - Today students had the beginning of class to finish working on their posters. They then decorated their Quarter 3 Notebooks with notes about perseverance.
Wednesday - Today students engaged in a virtual tour of the National Museum of African American History to begin gathering background knowledge on Frederick Douglass and the institution of slavery in the US.
Thursday - Today students completed an interactive online activity called "Escape from Slavery." In this activity, students were able to learn about the experiences of enslaved people as they sought a way to freedom. While students looked through the interactive website, they completed a series of questions on Google Classroom.
Friday - Ms. Hnatt out. Students finished their "Escape from Slavery" activity.

Tuesday - No school -- Teacher Work Day.
Wednesday - Today we officially began Module 3! Students reflected on Human Rights that they have learned about in social studies class. They then worked to complete Frayer Models for some of the vocabulary terms they will encounter during this module.
Thursday - Today, we had a shortened class period due to inclement weather. Students took some time to discuss how to engage in conversations that can be difficult, confusing, or uncomfortable. They then had the last 5-10 minutes of class to read.
Friday - No school due to inclement weather. Happy Snowy Day! :)

Monday - Today, students were given their Quarter 3 Book Project instructions. Those instructions can be accessed by clicking here or by looking on the homepage. Students had the rest of class to work on their research projects. These projects are due by 11:59pm on Friday, 2/14.
Tuesday - Core 1 took their ELA Benchmark test during class time. Core 2 continued to work on their research packets.
Wednesday - Today students had the entire class period to work on their research projects. These projects are due by 11:59pm on Friday, 2/14.

Monday - Today we had a research day! Students had the entire class period to research their company and gather information.
Tuesday - Today students watched a video of a WRAL Investigates news segment to analyze the structure of an investigative news report. Students were then given a Socratic Seminar prep sheet to prepare for our Socratic Seminar discussion tomorrow.
Wednesday - Today students engaged in a Socratic Seminar about working conditions.
Thursday - Today, students took some time to peer "edit" their research packets so far. Students swapped packets and looked for criteria such as quality of text-evidence, details included in explanations/analysis, and credibility of sources. Students then reviewed what makes a quality online source.
Friday - No school due to complications from Thursday's storm. See you Monday! :)

Monday - Today we continued our culminating activity using rhetorical appeals, the C.R.A.P. method, and methods of citation. Tomorrow students will present their final products to their peers.
Tuesday - Today students presented their final products to their peers. They then completed an exit ticket that assessed them on the skills they have been practicing during the past few weeks.
Wednesday - No school -- enjoy your day off!
Thursday - Today students learned the proper way to use MLA citations through a digital breakout activity! Then, we were introduced to our final project for Module 2. Students will be completing a research project where they select a popular company and investigate that company's working conditions. More information about the project will be given tomorrow in class.

Tuesday - Today students finished up their study of finding credible and reliable online sources using the "C.R.A.P." Method! C - currency, R - relevancy, A - Authority, and P - purpose. Students worked in groups to apply their knowledge of the method to evaluate 10 different sources.
Wednesday - Today, students learned all about plagiarism. As we are gearing up to complete a research assignment next week, we took a moment to discuss what plagiarism is, the different types of plagiarism seen in school, and the consequences of plagiarism -- both in school and beyond.
Thursday - Ms. Hnatt was out sick today. Students took notes on the difference between summarizing, paraphrasing, and directly quoting sources. They then completed an activity to practice all three skills.
Friday - Today students completed a culminating activity to practice identifying the 3 rhetorical appeals, evaluating sources using the C.R.A.P. method, and citing sources either directly or through paraphrasing/summarizing. Students will be continuing to work on this activity on Monday.
Week 2: 1/13-1/17
Monday - Today we engaged in a Gallery Walk to take a look at our Q2 Book Project masterpieces! Students were given the opportunity to view projects from all 4 ELA teachers' classes. As they viewed the projects, students answered 8 reflection questions.
Tuesday - Today, students began learning all about rhetoric and the 3 major persuasive appeals -- ethos, pathos, and logos. First, we wrote our own mini-arguments and analyzed our strategies of persuasion. Then, we watched a short video and took some brief guided notes on ethos, pathos, logos, and how to use them in speech and writing. Finally, students got to practice appealing to all three types of rhetoric by writing a mini-argument on Padlet to convince me to stop giving homework.
Wednesday - Today, to continue our discussion of rhetoric, we had a mini-discussion about how rhetoric is used in speech and in writing. Then, we had the opportunity to practice using rhetoric in speech -- by creating our own TED Talks! Students were able to choose a topic to provide advice to or inspire their audience. Each TED Talk was required to include all three rhetorical appeals: ethos, pathos, and logos. These videos were recorded and posted to FlipGrid.
Thursday - Today students had the beginning of class to finish filming and posting their FlipGrid videos. Once all videos were posted, students chose one other person's TED Talk to watch and evaluate. Finally, we wrapped up our mini-study of rhetoric with a Kahoot quiz.
Friday - Today students began learning how to evaluate online sources using the "C.R.A.P." Method! C - currency, R - relevancy, A - Authority, and P - purpose. Students took notes and practiced using this criteria to determine if online sources were credible or trustworthy enough to use in their research.

Monday - Welcome back, Chargers! Today in class, students kicked off Unit 2 of our Working Conditions Module by gathering background information about Cesar Chavez's movement for better working conditions for California farmers.
Tuesday - Today we briefly discussed Cesar Chavez's movement, his personal experiences that led to his movement, and his 4 agents of change. We then split up his Commonwealth Club Address speech to read and annotate. Students will work together in groups to teach their assigned part of the speech to the rest of their classmates.
Wednesday - Today students had the majority of class time to work in their expert groups and create their presentations! Students will present their sections of the speech tomorrow in class.
Thursday - Today, the students became the teachers! Students presented their sections of the speech to the rest of the class. As presentations were happening, the audience took brief notes to ensure that they understood what was being taught to them. Afterwards, students had the remainder of class to work on a note-catcher that they will be able to use for their speech reading check tomorrow.
Friday - Today students were given a Book Talk Work Day! They had the majority of the class period to work on their book projects after taking a reading check quiz.
